Hey y’all! Planning an outdoor elopement in Sedona is so exciting, but if you’ve never done it before, knowing what to ask your photographer can feel overwhelming. Beyond just liking someone’s editing style, you need a partner who knows these red rocks inside and out. Here are 10 honest, down-to-earth questions to ask before booking your dream Arizona elopement photographer.
Y’all, planning a red rock sedona elopement shouldn’t feel like filling out tax forms. A great photographer won’t just say ‘pick a spot.’ They’ll guide you through red rock gems and handle Forest Service legwork so you can just focus on being excited. This may be the most important questions to ask your elopement photographer. It’s also the one most people get hung up on and need help with!
Dudes, this kinda things happens. It happened over the summer of 2026 with the Pocket Fire. It ruined a hot air balloon experience because the balloons couldn’t launch because of smoke, the creek was closed from ash running into the water after storms,… Your photographer MUST be able to pivot. Dust storms, monsoon storms, hail, snow, rain… They are all so real here in Arizona. You want someone who can roll with the punches, who knows the trail alternatives like the back of their hand, and keeps the energy high no matter what Mother Nature throws your way. This is probably the second of the most important questions to ask you elopement photographer.
I’m not here for an assembly-line elopement schedule here. Your day should feel like a intentional, relaxed adventure where you can actually get to breathe, sip a drink, have a picnic, catch a sunset glow… Having said that, your timeline is most certainly based on when the good, juicy light is. Your photographer should know how to photograph in every light scenario because let’s face it… The ceremony with loved ones in the morning or afternoon will have different light than the private vows on a cliffside later that evening with the ooey-gooey golden hour light in the high desert.
Abs. Absolutely. Totally. The desert is fragile and sacred to this region. Your photographer should know how to get those epic, wild shots while keeping our trails pristine for everyone for generations to come. Check out the LNT website to learn more about how to he a good steward of the land.
Probs too much. I’d rather have too much than not enough! Your photographer needs to be prepared to hike with nearly 20 pounds of gear, no joke. Especially if they are carrying astrophotography gear such as tripod, flashes, transmitters, lanterns… One thing you can count on from me is that I will have two camera bodies, each with dual card slots. If one card fails (rare), then there is another one in camera to save to. I personally carry extra batteries, especially in colder weather because the cold just zaps the life out of them! I am also generally carrying multiple lenses, each calling for a different reason. I’ve got wide angles, tight compression, portrait lenses… You name it. My current favorite has been my 50 mm f/1.2 which is phenomenal for portraits!
I’m just gonna say it. I am entirely awkward in front of the camera. The only time I am not is when I have someone guiding me into a natural situation or natural poses. Most of us aren’t models or live in front of a camera (although let’s be real it is 2026 and everyone has a camera in their hand lately). You want someone who prompts you with real interactions, keeps things lighthearted and lets you just be yourselves instead of hitting stiff, awkward poses.
Putting together an intimate day in a town you might not live in or have visited can feel like a puzzle. A photographer who is truly plugged into the local community can introduce you to the absolute best local folks who treat you like family. Your photographer will have the odds and end vendors that fit your day (video, music, transport services, etc.), but the core vendors are people who I can recommend no matter what the situation and I know they will deliver. My current absolutely favorites are:
Officiants: Earth Elopements, Tom Vitron
Florists: Lily Luxe Florals, Wild Heart Farms
Hair and Makeup: Red Cheek Beauty (Helli), Desert Sage (Ash)
This goes for the photographer OR the eloping couple. Life happens, BUT your big day shouldn’t suffer for it. As a general rule, I reserve the day before and after the scheduled/booked day in case something comes up and we need to shift (usually weather related!). Otherwise, you’ll want to ask your photographer if they have someone else ready to step up for you seamlessly if an emergency pops up.
This has recently become very important to me. As your photographer who helps tailor your entire day, I have learned to ask more specific questions about fitness in order to match you to the correct hike. There is something to fit all skill-levels in Sedona from parking and walking 150 feet to a location to a multi-mile hike. Each couple is different! I just hiked 125 miles and 42,000 feet of elevation on a backpacking trip in Europe, so ya girl is ready for anything. Just know that it is absolutely not a prerequisite for you to be an avid hiker to elope in Sedona. You just need to be matched with the right location which is generally spearheaded by your photographer through questionnaires and multiple planning calls.
No hidden surprises here! You’ll want clear expectations on sneak peeks, full gallery turnaround times, printing rights and high-res downloads. You can find all of these in the photographers contract when you go through the booking process! I personally have a gallery turnaround time of 6 weeks for elopements, but strike for faster. My delivery method is through Pic-Time, which is a phenomenal digital gallery host site. Their gallery presentation is like no other and even has a printing lab at your fingertips! Also, feel free to ask your photographer for a few full galleries! They will be happy to send them to you. It’s a big decision, so ask away!
